Braving an inclement weather, soggy turf and a spirited fightback East Bengal registered a 1-0 victory over Wari FC in a Kolkata Super league tie here today.

Heavy downpour from last evening did not help the cause of the play as the ground was left soggy and looked like a mud-puddle in many parts.

The home team that began promisingly. Four minutes into the match a Tushar Rakshit freekick from the top of the box found wily Malswama scoring with an opportunistic header.

Then in the 26th minute East Bengal earned a penalty when Malsawmtlaunga was brought down inside the box. But the shot taken by Douglas from the resultant penalty was deflected out by Wari keeper Kalyan Lodh.

In the second half Wari gave a spirited display and on two occasion substitute Sabir Ali came very close to finding the equalizer. Three minute into the second half Sabir Ali’s header of a Nirapada De center missed the mark narrowly, then again in the 88th minute Sabir Ali’s shot was acrobatically kept out by East Bengal custodian Rajat Ghosh Dastidar.

Douglas had got a gilt-edged opportunity to make amends for his missed penalty towards the end of the match. But he could not put a foot to a Shasty Duley minus that caught Wari goalie on the wrong foot.
