Santo Mitra passes away

Santo Mitra former East Bengal captain who lead the team in the club’s historic victory over Iran’s PAS Club in 1970 died of cancer at the age of 75 today morning at Kolkata.

Salient features in his Club career:

 

1) He was the captain when East Bengal defeated PAS Club(Iran) 1-0 to win the IFA Shield in 1970. Just before the start of the match he struck off Sankar Banerjee's name from the team list and included Parimal Dey. Dey came in as a sub in late stages  and scored the winner.

 

2) He brought of a last minute goal line save in the 1965 IFA Shield Final to facilitate the Red and Golds to lift the trophy.

 

3) He was the member of the East Bengal team which remained unbeaten throughout the season in 1972 and won all the five trophies.

 

He started his career in the first Division with Wari.
