East Bengal lose in I League Derby

Mohun Bagan recorded their first win outside Kolkata since Dec,2000 when they defeated Kingfisher East Bengal 2-1 at Kanchenjunga Stadium,Siliguri this evening.


With this win Mohun Bagan climbed to second position with 29 points from 14 matches while East Bengal slipped to third position with 27 points from 15 matches.This was also Trevor Morgan's first loss at Siliguri.


Though the exchanges were even initially, Mohun Bagan took the lead in the 35th minute through a brilliant free kick conversion by Sony Norde. Azharuddin Mallick doubled the lead on the stroke of half time with a clever lob. The second half was scrappy and East Bengal was reduced to 10 men midway through when Willis Deon Plaza was Red Carded for an off ball foul.


Rowllin Borges scored a consolation goal in the added time when he volleyed in a Christopher Payne assist. Gurwinder Singh and Christopher Payne (East Bengal), Raju Gaikwad (Mohun Bagan) were booked in the match.


Sony Norde of Mohyn Bagan was adjudged Man of the Match.
